Innovate on a business-academic project: apply for funding
UK businesses can benefit from a Knowledge Transfer Partnership, collaborating with a university or research organisation and highly-qualified graduate. Up to Β£40 million is available this financial year for businesses to take part in a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP). The programme helps turn academic thinking into commercial products and services, bringing new knowledge and skills into businesses to boost growth and competitiveness. Academic thinking to commercial success KTPs offer funding and support to help UK businesses bring in new insight from academia to tackle a particular challenge they face. Businesses can begin a new partnership with a university, college or research and technology organisation, working with a Knowledge Transfer Advisor to set this up, or build on an existing relationship. Through this, they will recruit a suitable graduate to work on an innovation project. Projects can focus on any technology or industry area, and last between 1 and 3 years. KTP applications must: focus on a specific project set out the nature and goals of the project give details of who will take part establish what the graduate will be expected to deliver Qioptiq secures largest contract Qioptiq designs and manufactures photonic products for multiple markets and sectors, including X-ray imaging for medical and modules for defence. Following a KTP with the Cardiff Business School at Cardiff University - which allowed it to implement more efficient, agile forecasting - Qioptiq secured a contract with the Ministry of Defence worth Β£82 million. This is the companyβs largest ever and will ensure UK armed forces have access to essential night vision equipment. New centres to speed up patient diagnosis: apply for funding
Up to Β£50 million is available to build a network of centres for digital pathology and medical imaging, via the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund. UK organisations can apply for a share of up to Β£50 million through a funding competition to develop a network of centres of excellence in digital pathology and medical imaging technology. Run under the Industrial Strategy This competition is part of the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund in the challenge area: from data to early diagnosis and precision medicine. The funding β which is provided by UK Research and Innovation and delivered by Innovate UK β will maximise the UKβs potential to diagnose diseases earlier and identify the best interventions for patients, as well as developing new treatments. One of the activities in this challenge focuses on digital pathology, radiology and diagnostics. It will help to advance the digitisation of these important areas of diagnosis, increase the efficiency and quality of the review process and get new precision treatments to patients earlier. Commercialising quantum technologies: opportunity to invest
Innovate UK as part of the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund (ISCF) has up to Β£12 million to invest in innovative projects exploiting new quantum technologies and is seeking private investment partners to join it. New quantum technologies could transform products and services in many business sectors including automotive, healthcare, infrastructure, telecommunications, cybersecurity and defence. Quantum physics is at the heart of the electronics, media, computing and infrastructure systems we use in everyday life. A second generation of quantum technologies based on new quantum effects could lead to more secure digital communication, improved construction and radical increases in computing power. The UK governmentβs Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund (ISCF) Commercialising Quantum Technologies Challenge is a Β£153 million investment in projects that will help the UK to lead the world in development of these new technologies. Safer, more nutritious food for Africa: apply for funding
The up to Β£3 million competition is for UK organisations to work with partners in Africa to innovate in agriculture and food systems. UK businesses and research organisations can apply for a share of up to Β£3 million to develop and embed agri-tech and food chain innovations in Africa, collaborating with African countries. The funding, announced by International Development Secretary Penny Mordaunt, is part of a package of support to help farmers across Africa grow their businesses and protect livestock. Funding in this Agri-tech Catalyst competition comes from the Department for International Development (DFID), with the process managed by Innovate UK. The challenge in Africa Three-quarters of the poorest people in Africa (75%) live in rural areas and are reliant on agriculture and livestock for their livelihoods. Yet, while agriculture and food systems are quickly evolving, uptake of new technologies and practices is low in African countries. For example, just 28% of cultivatable land in Africa grows modern crop varieties, compared with 65% worldwide. Action is needed to ensure that Africa can adapt in order to deliver a nutritious, sustainable and secure food supply that supports a healthy population. For UK organisations, there is an opportunity to apply agri-tech skills and knowledge to a new market, further innovate and support international development. Increase pace and scale up This competition aims to increase the pace of development and scale up innovative agricultural and food systems in Africa. It is looking for projects that transform how Africa approaches existing and new technologies and embraces change. These should target farmers and others involved in the food value chain including manufacturers, processors, retailers, distributors and wholesalers. Projects can be for early-stage feasibility studies, mid-stage industrial research or late-stage experimental development. They should: be sustainable and support environmental challenges such as climate change and resource scarcity minimise negative outcomes such as pollution, food losses and waste promote safe, healthy and nutritious diets for people They could include: primary crop and livestock production, including aquaculture non-food uses of crops, for everything excluding ornamentals challenges in food processing, distribution or storage, and adding value, such as through a change in the physical state or form of the product improving the availability and accessibility of safe, healthy and nutritious foods Other factors to consider are gender equality, particularly how empowering girls and women could tackle unequal access and control of assets and improve agricultural productivity or food security. The Β£3.5 million funding opportunity for businesses will encourage innovation in the UK rail sector, demonstrate new technologies to customers and industry and build better railways for everyone. Greener railways and a better customer experience We are looking for well-developed innovations that are ready to be tested in an environment with railway customers and industry. The competition has 2 themes. In the first, projects should look at reducing the carbon footprint of railways across stations, rolling stock and infrastructure. Improve cyber security in the Internet of Things: apply for funds
Up to Β£6 million funding to support new ideas that can help keep connected devices and applications safe and secure. Connected devices and sensors in our homes and workplaces β known as the Internet of Things (IoT) β offer huge potential for improving how we live and move around. We can measure health data, travel habits and energy use, predict demand for public services and support planning and management of critical national infrastructure. But as more devices become connected, the more vulnerable they are to sophisticated cyber security threats. This becomes even more important as critical applications for the IoT emerge. Innovate UK has up to Β£6 million to invest in organisations with ideas that address industry-focused cyber security-related challenges. The investment forms part of the UK Research and Innovation Strategic Priorities Fund, which supports the highest priorities identified by researchers and businesses.
